This was forwarded to me recently:
I do not know who this retired Lieutenant is. I do know who we are. If you have anything you wish to send over, please do not let a small shipping/postage fee dissuade you. We will pick up all postage for anything you have. LMK what I owe you. If you are in the area, do a nice thing. I am going to.

Dear Sir,
I am the director of social services for a nursing home upstate in Putnam County.  I have a former Lt. Detective in my facility with mild dementia who has limited family involvement.
I am looking for potential former members of the Force in the area that might be willing to visit him on occasion.  I am also looking for newsletters or trade magazines (his reading comprehension is minimal so publications with photos would be ideal) that he could look at, helping him to feel connected.  His perception of time is very poor so out-dated publications would be just as exciting as if it came out yesterday.
If you could connect me with a local chapter of a retired police group or any other assistance in helping this individual we would be most grateful.
Yours,
Jonathan L. Mayo

Attention Law Enforcement Unions and Organizations,

Please remind your members and staff  of the impending deadline in regards to Notices of Participation WTC and/or the Worker's Compensation form WTC-12.  These forms must be prepared, notarized and submitted no later than 9/11/2010.

Each City and State pension system has their own Notice of Participation WTC and they are due by the same deadline (9/11/10) in accordance with state law. It is further recommended that those individuals who volunteered in addition to their work hours, or are eligible for Worker's Compensation through their City or State employer, prepare both a Notice of Participation AND a WTC-12 form.

Below you will find helpful links to the various N.O.P. and the WTC-12 form. The below links are NOT all inclusive, please verify with your respective pension systems which Notice of Participation applies to your members.

A physical challenge, an emotional high, and the opportunity to help C.O.P.S.

The 6th annual COPS Walk will bring together 125 survivors and members of the law enforcement community to take on the challenge of walking 25 miles in two days. All registered walkers are asked to raise $1,000 to support Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.). To help the dedicated walkers reach this goal visit www.razoo.com/story/Cops-Walk-2010 and read the law enforcement survivors' inspirational stories and why they are raising funds for the COPS Walk.

The COPS Walk will be held October 9-10, 2010, along the scenic and historic C&O Canal from Virginia through Maryland and into West Virginia, with participants walking 12.5 miles a day. The goal is to raise funds to ensure that C.O.P.S. continues helping those who have lost a loved one in the line of duty and provide the programs that help those families rebuild their shattered lives. The walk is designed to give participants a physical challenge as well as the opportunity to spend time with other survivors and friends walking in memory of loved ones.

This year, Sleep Walkers, those who just can't "get out of bed" to be there, are welcomed. They are asked to raise $1,000. Sleep Walkers will receive the COPS Walk 2010 gift, a pillow case for their bed, and the personal satisfaction of knowing they are helping to rebuild shattered lives.

Joshua Campbell's brother, Officer Jason Campbell with the Greenville (NC) Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on April 14, 2007. Joshua will be attending COPS Walk 2010 for his third year. "COPS Walk is one of my favorite weekends of the year because I reunite with a great group of people, both survivors and law enforcement. The weekend gives us a chance to reflect on what's important in life, share the memories of our loved ones, and build lasting friendships. While honoring Jason's memory, I have been fortunate to meet so many wonderful people. It is important to honor the memory of our officers and to remember the families left behind," said Joshua.

Visit C.O.P.S.' website www.nationalcops.org for more information on the organization or to support the 2010 COPS Walk. Or visit www.razoo.com to support your favorite walker in the COPS Walk 2010.

As a longtime member of the NYPD's elite Emergency Service Unit, as well as a licensed physician's assistant, Det. Dennis Canale is used to saving lives. Those dual skills were never put to better use than in November 2008, when he saved the life of retired Det. Greg Boyle, who while working as a security guard had been shot and wounded during a robbery at a jewelry store located inside the Waldorf Astoria hotel.
When Canale saw air bubbles accompanying the blood oozing out of the victim's chest, he realized the lung was affected.
Without any hesitation, he put his finger in the bullet hole so the lung cavity wouldn't collapse and compress the heart.
As he did so, another responder told the wounded man, "Don't worry, ESU is here."
Boyle said those were the most reassuring words he's ever heard in his life.
Now Canale is the one who needs assistance. His three-year-old son Christopher was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer in April. Although the tumor was successfully removed by surgery, he still requires months of chemotherapy and radiation.
Because of Christopher's young age, he is going to need Proton radiation therapy, which is only given at six locations throughout the United States.
Only 25 percent of the expensive treatment is covered by insurance.
Canale's colleagues at ESU Truck 5 have organized a fundraiser, scheduled for October 28 at Bootleg Mannings, 2645 Forest Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10303. Tel: 718-981-4988. In the meantime, T-shirts can be purchased for $10 and all proceeds will go to the Canale family. Anyone wishing to make a donation should make out a check to: Dennis Canale and mail it to Paul DiGiacomo, Treasurer, Detectives Endowment Association, 26 Thomas Street, New York, NY 10007.

My name is Anthony Greco, and I was a Transit cop in District 4 and 34. I retired after the merge. I have recently been diagnosed with Asbestosis. In order to get on the Asbestos registry I had to open a comp case.

The Compensation Board wants me to find out if other cops have similar problems. I have contacted Mother Transit and have not received any info yet. I am currently submitting a Freedom Of Information Letter for the statistics on this.  However, in the meantime I decided to reach out to you and inquire if you or any of your old coworkers are suffering from lung conditions as a result of being exposed to asbestos dust while working.

Maybe we can share info and help each other.  I would be grateful for any information you can provide, Please email me at Agreco10@tampabay.rr.com

Thank you in advance for your help in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you
